The owner of a Microsoft 365 Family??????? subscription can share their benefits with up to five people. Accepting this invitation grants you access to the subscription benefits including 1 TB of personal OneDrive storage and desktop apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Before they can share their subscription, you will need to join their Microsoft family group. If you're in another family group, you'll have to leave that one first before you can join another.

How to accept a Microsoft 365 subscription shared with you

A Microsoft family group is a feature that helps families stay connected and manage digital safety across Microsoft services. It’s especially useful for households with children or shared devices.

If you are not yet in their family group, you will receive an email invitation or link to join their family group.

Note:?If you are already in another family group, you will need to leave it to join their group. Learn how to leave a Microsoft family group.

  1. When you receive an email inviting you to share Microsoft 365 Family, select Get started.

  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account to join the Microsoft family group.

    Note:?If you don't have a Microsoft account, you'll be prompted to create one.?

  3. Select Join now to accept the invitation to join your family group.

Once you are a member of their family group, you can accept the invitation to share their subscription.

  1. When you receive the?email inviting you to share Microsoft 365 Family, select Accept.

  2. To start using Microsoft 365 and Office apps, sign in to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365?with your Microsoft account.Sign in

  3. Select the button Install Office and follow the prompts. For step-by-step help to download and install the apps, see Sign in to download and install Office on a PC or Mac.

No, the personal data of each person sharing a subscription remains private.

None of your personal files, emails, appointments, contacts, photos, or notebooks will appear in the shared Family locations. They are stored separately.

Note:?Members of the family group do have access to a?shared Family email Inbox, Calendar, and OneNote, but you can always choose what information you share.

No one will have access to your personal files – they remain only accessible to you unless you explicitly share them with others.

None of your data is shared with the subscription holder once you join.

If you wish, you can share certain types of data, like web browsing activity and screen time. Go to the Microsoft Family Safety home page to learn more.

Once you accept the invitation, you'll see a new Family inbox and Family calendar in Outlook.com. You'll also see a Family Notebook in OneNote. These locations are created so group members can easily share important information while keeping their private files, emails, and information separate.

If the Microsoft 365 subscription holder lets their subscription expire, your files will remain intact.

You will continue to be part of the group, but all the?subscription benefits will expire for you too, including:

  • You will lose your 1TB OneDrive storage benefit, and it will revert back to its previous size. Please see this article about canceling a Microsoft 365 subscription for more information.

  • You will lose access to the fully functional desktop Office applications.

  • You will still be able to view and print your Office files, but you won't be able to edit them or create new documents.

If you leave or are removed from the family group, or if the subscription holder stops sharing with you, your files will remain intact, but all the?subscription benefits will expire, including:
